there is several techniques of making animation. that is the main ones:

 

1. Stop motion (frame by frame)

2. drawing-animation (frame by frame)

3. motion-twin (key-frames)

4. computer animation (key-frames) 

 

"frame by frame" mean you create each frame in you self.

"key-frames" is a thechnique used with computers wich alows you to add key-frame and the computer will calculate all the frames between.
